Alcohol detox · Tarzana, CA
Alcohol detox in Los Angeles, with the risks named plainly.
Alcohol detox in Los Angeles at Lumora Recovery is medically supervised withdrawal from alcohol in our state-licensed residence in Tarzana. Withdrawal usually starts 6 to 24 hours after the last drink and can lead to seizures or delirium tremens, so it starts with one question: how dangerous could this withdrawal be?
What alcohol withdrawal is, and why stopping suddenly is risky
After long, heavy drinking, the body adapts to alcohol being there. When drinking stops or drops sharply, it reacts, and that reaction is withdrawal. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) says up to half of people with alcohol use disorder go through some form of it.
MedlinePlus describes a range from mild to life threatening. Federal treatment guidance is blunt that the course is unpredictable: no one can say in advance who will develop a dangerous complication. So the right order is medical advice first, then stopping.

Timeline
The alcohol withdrawal timeline, from the last drink
Times are typical ranges from MedlinePlus and federal treatment guidance. A person can move through them faster or slower, and the stages overlap.
| Time since the last drink | What can happen | What it means for a family |
|---|---|---|
| 6 to 24 hours | Shaking, sweating, anxiety, nausea, headache, a racing heart and broken sleep. It can begin while alcohol is still in the blood. | Early withdrawal. Medical advice should come before stopping, not after it starts. |
| 12 to 48 hours | The window when withdrawal seizures are most likely, with the peak around 24 hours. | A seizure is a reason to call 911. |
| 24 to 72 hours | Symptoms often reach their worst. | The stretch where close watching matters most. |
| 48 to 96 hours, sometimes up to 10 days | Delirium tremens: sudden, severe confusion, hallucinations, agitation and tremor. | A medical emergency that needs a hospital. Call 911. |
| Weeks to months | Poor sleep, mood swings and tiredness that linger after the acute phase. | Common, and a reason treatment continues after detox. |
Not a self-management guide. Anyone who drinks heavily every day should talk to a medical professional before stopping.
The two emergencies
Alcohol withdrawal seizures and delirium tremens
These are the complications that make alcohol different from most other substances. Both are reasons to call 911, not to wait and see.
Seizures
Withdrawal seizures usually come within 48 hours of the last drink and peak around the first day. Federal guidance notes they cannot be predicted with certainty. Federal guidance lists a past withdrawal seizure among the histories that call for early medical treatment.
Delirium tremens (DTs)
DTs are the most severe form of alcohol withdrawal: sudden changes in thinking and the nervous system, with confusion, hallucinations and shaking. MedlinePlus says they are most common in people who have been through withdrawal before, who have drunk heavily every day for several months, or who have drunk for more than ten years. DTs need hospital care. A residence is not the place for them, Lumora included.
Before the call
Six things that raise the risk: tell admissions
Each of these raises the stakes, according to MedlinePlus and federal treatment guidance. If one applies, say so on the call. The assessment may point to a hospital first.
- A past withdrawal seizure or delirium tremensFederal guidance lists this history as a reason for early medical treatment.
- Several past withdrawals, each one worseRepeated withdrawals tend to make the next one more severe, an effect called kindling.
- Heavy daily drinking for months, or drinking for more than ten yearsBoth are linked to delirium tremens.
- Benzodiazepines or other sedatives as well as alcoholMixing them changes how withdrawal is judged, and benzodiazepines carry their own withdrawal risks.
- A serious medical or mental health condition that is not stableFederal guidance calls for early medical treatment in this situation.
- Eating poorly while drinkingIt can leave the body short of thiamine, the vitamin behind Wernicke encephalopathy.

Setting
Alcohol detox in Los Angeles: at home, in a residence or in hospital?
MedlinePlus describes outpatient care for mild to moderate symptoms, and care in a hospital or specialized facility with close monitoring for moderate to severe withdrawal. A licensed residential program approved for incidental medical services, like Lumora, sits between home and hospital.
| At home, with daily visits | Licensed residence approved for IMS (Lumora) | Hospital | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Can suit | Mild to moderate symptoms, with someone sober at home and a provider seeing the person each day | Withdrawal that needs monitoring but not a hospital, as judged at assessment | Severe withdrawal, delirium tremens, or a history of seizures or DTs |
| Where the person sleeps | Their own home | The house on Wilbur Avenue, licensed for six residents | A hospital bed |
| What it is not | A plan for anyone with a history of severe withdrawal | Hospital care: IMS excludes services that must happen in a licensed health facility | The end of care: treatment still follows |
How to check Lumora’s approval. California’s Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) lets licensed residential programs apply for approval to provide incidental medical services (IMS), which include medical histories, health monitoring and the treatment of substance use disorders, detox among them. The state’s facility record lists Lumora Recovery under License No. 191642AP as a residential program with detoxification, IMS approved, for six residents. See Lumora’s entry in the DHCS facility record.

Thiamine, Wernicke encephalopathy and mixed use
Heavy drinking can leave the body short of thiamine, vitamin B1. Without enough of it, the brain can develop Wernicke encephalopathy: confusion, poor coordination and problems with eye movement. MedlinePlus describes it as a condition that needs urgent care. It is one more reason alcohol withdrawal belongs with medical professionals.
Alcohol is often not the only substance. The assessment asks about everything a person uses, because each changes the picture. If opioids are part of it, read about how opioid withdrawal differs, and its risks afterward.
After the medical phase
Alcohol detox in Tarzana, then treatment in the same house
Detox clears alcohol from the body. It does not treat the drinking. NIAAA calls withdrawal management a first step, and the National Institute on Drug Abuse says detox alone does little to change long-term use.
At Lumora, the person stays in the same house when the medical phase ends and moves into residential treatment, with no new intake elsewhere. What that treatment involves is on our page about alcohol rehab after detox. For how detox works across every substance, see medical detox at Lumora.
Paying for it: we work with many PPO plans, and admissions checks benefits for detox and the treatment after it by phone. How rehab insurance works.
Safety first
Seizure, hallucinations or severe confusion: call 911.
During alcohol withdrawal, call 911 or go to an emergency room for a seizure, a fever, severe confusion, hallucinations or an irregular heartbeat. If someone is in a mental health or substance use crisis, or thinking about suicide, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, at any hour.
FAQ
Questions families ask
When do alcohol withdrawal symptoms start?
Usually within 6 to 24 hours of the last drink. MedlinePlus puts the typical start at about eight hours. Shaking, sweating, anxiety and trouble sleeping are common first signs.
How long does alcohol withdrawal last?
Some symptoms can last for weeks, and poor sleep, mood swings and tiredness can carry on for months. The acute phase often peaks between 24 and 72 hours, and delirium tremens, when it happens, usually starts between 48 and 96 hours.
What are the signs of delirium tremens?
Sudden, severe confusion, agitation, hallucinations and body tremors, sometimes with seizures. It is a medical emergency that needs hospital care. Call 911.
When can alcohol withdrawal seizures happen?
Most often in the first 12 to 48 hours after the last drink, with the highest risk around the 24-hour mark. Federal guidance says they cannot be predicted with certainty, which is why a seizure history matters so much at assessment.
Why can each alcohol withdrawal be worse than the last?
Researchers call it kindling: after repeated withdrawals, the next one tends to be more severe. People with several past withdrawals need closer medical attention, so tell admissions how many there have been.
Can alcohol withdrawal start before someone has sobered up?
Yes. Federal treatment guidance notes that withdrawal can begin while there is still a significant amount of alcohol in the blood. A falling level, not an empty one, can be enough.
What is Wernicke encephalopathy?
A brain condition caused by a lack of thiamine (vitamin B1), which is common in people with alcohol use disorder. It causes confusion, unsteadiness and eye problems, and it needs urgent medical care.
Why are sleep and mood still off weeks after alcohol detox?
Sleep changes, mood swings and fatigue can last for months after the acute phase, according to MedlinePlus. It is common, and it is one reason the treatment that follows detox matters.
